What makes a good leader?

A good leader strikes an optimal balance between managing work to achieve goals and managing people with respect.

I’m fortunate to have encountered a few such leaders in my 15 years in professional life.

One of them promoted me in less than a year, saying I deserved it, considering the outstanding skillset I brought to the table.

Another listened intently as I told her about a serious family setback that compelled me to take a few days’ leave.

Still another, very early in my career, wept as I tendered my resignation. She knew I wanted to stay but had to go elsewhere. She was such a mother figure, she became one of my wedding’s principal sponsors (ninang) several years later.

The leaders I’ve encountered who needed help in becoming good leaders probably just needed brilliant role models. I feel sorry for them and wish them happiness.
